How To Install Reptile Lamp Properly?


It is obvious that reptiles require special lighting and heating in their vivarium. Heating and lighting not only maintain reptile health but also help them thrive.

The amount of heat that reptiles need depends on their species and where they live in the natural. So it is necessary to research about their temperature requirements, the types of heat lamp are good for them.

And one more important aspect is the proper way to install reptile lamp in their cage.

Installing the lamps for reptiles

Position

The best position to install heat lamp in your reptile cage is at the and of the warmer side and far away from the colder side. This position will help you get the full benefit of your heat lamp and also create the temperature gradient.

Distance

The distance between the heat lamp and your reptiles is also an important factor that you should consider. If the distance is too close to the floor, it may lead to overheat and dehydrate your pet.

If it is too high up, it may have no effect or you will need the stronger wattage of heat lamp to get adequate UVB rays.

The distance will depend on your types of heat lamps and the species of your pet, but for general, you are recommended to place the lamp far about 10 to 12 inches from the tank floor.

Temperature

The basking area in the tank should be about 95-98 degrees F (35-37 degrees C). This temperature can be changed depends on your pets. If they prefer to bask under the heat lamp or they are nocturnal.

It is better to give your pets the basking platform that they can lay and bask such as a piece of store, rocks or logs. These things also can be used to optimize the temperature at the basking area by its ability to retain heat for a long time.

Thermometer

You should purchase on the best thermometer in order to ensure the temperature not only at the warm side but the cool side as well.

The cool part in the enclosure should not go down below 68 degrees F (about 20 degrees C). The best way to monitor the temperature in the cage is by using two thermometers at each end of the enclosure.
